Endodontics: Root Canal Treatment

If the root canal of the tooth is infected, there is nothing left to do than to remove the whole tooth – that is the rule which have applied for many dentist offices in the world even until now. What is endodontics?

It is necessary to perform an endodontic treatment (dental root canal treatment) when the dental pulp is infected in the tooth, for example by dental caries. In this case, the infected pulp needs to be removed as soon as possible in order to stop the infection from spreading. The space left after the removed pulp (the pulp chamber) then needs to be filled by a special biologically inert material in order to restore the original functionality of the tooth.

How many visits will I need to get my root canal fixed?

You will need to come to the clinic twice in order to get your dental root canal treated. During the first visit, the dentist removes the infected pulp, cleans the tooth completely and fills the pulp chamber with biologically inert material which will restore your tooth’s full functionality. This material needs to be in the tooth for at least 10 days in order to do its job. After this period, during your second visit, the dentist will finish the treatment and close your tooth with a composite of ceramic dental filling.
