Endodontics: Root Canal Treatment

If the root canal of the tooth is infected, there is nothing left to do than to remove the whole tooth – that is the rule which have applied for many dentist offices in the world even until now. In modern dentistry practice, this is of course nonsense. With the introduction of dental operating microscope at the turn of the century, the success rate of endodontic treatments has increased up to 97 %.

What is endodontics?

It is necessary to perform an endodontic treatment (dental root canal treatment) when the dental pulp is infected in the tooth, for example by dental caries. In this case, the infected pulp needs to be removed as soon as possible in order to stop the infection from spreading. The space left after the removed pulp (the pulp chamber) then needs to be filled by a special biologically inert material in order to restore the original functionality of the tooth.

Endodontics demands a very delicate work and absolute precision from the dentist. Specialists at our clinic have rich experience in this field and they use only newest endodontic tools for their work, including high-quality dental operating microscope of a prestigious Carl Zeiss brand, which allows them to treat even very complicated cases with almost 100 % success.

How many visits will I need to get my root canal fixed?

You will need to come to the clinic twice in order to get your dental root canal treated. During the first visit, the dentist removes the infected pulp, cleans the tooth completely and fills the pulp chamber with biologically inert material which will restore your tooth’s full functionality. This material needs to be in the tooth for at least 10 days in order to do its job. After this period, during your second visit, the dentist will finish the treatment and close your tooth with a composite of ceramic dental filling.

What are the advantages of treatments performed with dental operating microscope?

  • The microscope enables to ascertain the exact location of root canals, their throughput, flections and any other possible anatomic specifications of the patient’s teeth, which are usually not detectable by naked eye
  • Full visual control during such treatment enables to truly remove only the infected parts of the tooth and to safely preserve all healthy tissues
  • Treatment performed with the use of dental operating microscope decreases the risk of breaking the file inside the root, as well as the risk of perforation (creating a false root canal in the tooth) or of overlooking other infected root canals
  • Even quite complicated treatments can be performed with the use of dental operating microscope, as well as repeated treatment (when the root canal had already been treated once before), removal of the fragments of broken files which could have stayed in the root canal after previous unsuccessful treatments etc.

Question: What exactly is the dental operating microscope?

Answer: Formerly, the dentist had to only rely on his eyes and his touch in order to examine even complicated problems of teeth and the gums. With the introduction of operational microscope an additional insight was provided for them and for example, the success rate of endodontic treatments – for which the microscope is primarily used – has increased up to 97 %. The microscope enables to magnify up to 30 times, which makes dental treatments precise and thorough.

Question: Hello, I’ve visited my dentist three times already but the tooth still hurts. Why?

Answer: Endodontics demands a very delicate work and absolute precision from the dentist. The re-occurring pain suggests the tooth hasn’t been treated completely, it could be a dental tool broken in the root etc. Specialists at our clinic have rich experience in this field and they use only newest endodontic tools for their work, including high-quality dental operating microscope of a prestigious Carl Zeiss brand, which allows them to treat even very complicated cases with almost 100 % success.
